Flashcards are revision tools that present information in a question-and-answer format. Each Grade Booster card features multiple related questions on one side with comprehensive answers on the reverse. This format allows students to test themselves across several key points in one go, making revision more efficient and thorough.
Unlike passive revision methods like reading notes, flashcards require active engagement. Students must retrieve information from memory, identify gaps in their knowledge, and reinforce what they already know - all of which leads to deeper, longer-lasting learning.
the science behind flashcards
Flashcards work because they harness two powerful learning principles that are backed by decades of cognitive science research: active recall and spaced repetition.
Active Recall is the process of retrieving information from memory rather than simply reviewing it. When students test themselves with flashcards, they're strengthening the neural connections that help them remember information during exams. Research consistently shows that active recall is far more effective than passive revision methods. The effort of remembering makes the memory stronger.
Spaced Repetition involves reviewing information at increasing intervals over time. Students naturally return to flashcards they find challenging whilst spending less time on material they've already mastered. This targeted approach ensures revision time is spent where it's needed most, making study sessions more efficient and less frustrating.
Together, these principles transform flashcards from simple study aids into powerful learning tools. Students don't just memorise facts - they develop genuine understanding and build the confidence to apply their knowledge under exam conditions.

- Found that combining spaced repetition with active recall is more effective than using either technique alone, with 91% of pharmacy students traditionally relying on less effective methods like re-reading

about us
Our Approach - Evidence-Based, Teacher-Led Revision
We create revision tools based on what actually works - cognitive science research and real classroom experience. Every set of flashcards is designed by subject specialists who know the National 5 curriculum inside out and understand exactly where students struggle.
We identify the trickiest concepts, craft questions that build genuine understanding, and test everything with real students. Our commitment is to effectiveness, not fluff. Each card is purposefully designed with multiple related questions that challenge students to think, apply and demonstrate real comprehension.
Our Values - Achieving Success Together
Teacher Expertise - Subject specialists create every card, ensuring accuracy, quality and curriculum alignment.
Student Success - Do our flashcards help students achieve better results? That's our only measure of success.
Honesty - We don't make false promises. Flashcards are powerful tools, but they work best with consistent, purposeful use.
Accessibility - Every student deserves effective revision resources at an affordable price.
Evidence-Based Practice - We follow the research, not trends or gimmicks.
Our Story - From Classroom Frustration to Effective Solution
Grade Booster Flashcards was born from a staffroom conversation between Scottish science teachers. We kept seeing the same pattern: hardworking students spending hours on ineffective revision - re-reading notes, highlighting textbooks - only to underperform on exam day. Meanwhile, students who actively tested themselves were retaining information better and achieving higher grades.
We knew the research supported this. Active recall and spaced repetition aren't new - they're proven learning principles. But most students either didn't know about these methods or couldn't face creating quality revision materials from scratch.
So we did it for them. We had the curriculum knowledge, the teaching experience, and the understanding of where students struggled. We started with Biology, tested it with our students, refined it based on feedback, and saw measurable improvements in understanding and grades. Chemistry and Physics followed.
What began as a solution for our own classrooms has grown into something we're proud to share across Scotland. We're still teachers first, and that keeps our flashcards grounded in reality. We've built Grade Booster because we've seen what's possible when students have the right tools - and every student who achieves their goals reminds us why we started.
we supply schools
We also supply schools with our flashcards. We provide a discount to schools purchasing our cards for in-class learning.
